Abstract

The Italo-Cretan icon with the Man of Sorrows which belongs to the collections of the Byzantine and Christian Museum of Athens represents on each side of the half-depicted Christ the saints John the Baptist and Gerasimos. The commissioner himself who would have wanted to express not only his cultivated status but also his connections to the humanistic cycles of the Cretan capital Candia should most probably be considered as the one who ordered these saints specifically as a personal statement. From an artistic point of view, the icon could be related to the workshop of Pavias and be dated approximately around 1500.
