Cross-reliquaries in the Tsolozidis collection. Remarks on technique and iconography
Abstract
The article discusses nine crosses-reliquaries from the Tsolozidis collection. The crosses form two groups; two out of the nine examples are cast crosses with relief decoration while the other seven are crosses with engraved decoration. The decorative configuration of the first group includes on the obverse side the synoptic scene of the Crucifixion while on the reverse the four Evangelists in medallions while the Virgin is standing and orant. In the second group on the obverse side again the symbol of the Cross which can either be the depiction of the Crucifixion or the sign of the cross created by palm leaves and on the reverse several different figures, the Virgin as well as other popular saints, i.e. Nicholaus or George in the same standing and orant posture. The crosses-reliquaries of the Tsolozidis collection can be dated in the 8th century.
