Abstract

Mauropus, in his epigram ΕςτήνντΣωσθενίεκόνα, describes a monumental representation of a coronation of emperors (most probably Michael VII Doukas and his wife Maria of Alania) by Christ. It is deduced from the epigram that the octagon-type church of the Archangel Michael at Sosthenion, which was refounded by Justinian in the period 536-552, follows the architectural plan of the Constantinopolitan church of Sts Sergius and Bacchus. Moreover, on the basis of the testimony also of another epigram, the terminus post quem of the foundation of the latter is shifted from the year 527 to the year 532.
