Abstract

The church of Saint Constantine and the Forty Martyrs of Sivas donation of Basil of Tigori at Erdemli, Cappadocia

The double church of Saint Constantine and the Forty Martyrs of Sivas at Erdemli of Cappadocia consists of two partitions; the north one with a vaulted roofing and the south with a flat roofing. On the apse of the south church, a dedicatory inscription cites the donor Basil of Tigori, who due to his commemoration as an imperial officer must have been a Hellenized Armenian. The fresco decoration of the church is of high quality and albeit its fragmentary state of preservation, can be dated in the second half of the 11th century. The decoration of the flat ceiling of the south church is unique in the whole of Cappadocia as it depicts in busts the portraits of the Forty Martyrs of Sivas
