Abstract

The article discusses the well-known, in the scholarly research, icon of Saint Panteleemon framed by 16 complementary scenes of his vita, which is kept at the monastery of Sinai. However, the vita scenes were never interpreted under the light of the philological tradition of the Saint's Encomia, Orations or Legendaries composed by different writers during the centuries, which is the scope of this paper. Furthermore, the quest for similar iconographic cycles of the Saint confirms the source of inspiration for some of the scenes. Finally, it is being suggested that the vita scenes must have been depicted in monumental art too, presumably at the shrine of the Saint in Nicomedia, where he martyred and was buried.
