The church of the Dormition of the Virgin at Episkopi (Ano Bolos) and its sculptural decoration
Abstract
The paper deals with the architecture and the sculptural decoration of the church of the Dormition of the Virgin on the top of Episkopi hill in Ano Volos. From the original church of the second half of the 13th century –probably a variant of cross-plan type– remain only the east wall with the three-sided apse of the holy bema. The Byzantine church was completely reconstructed in 1639. The east and north walls are richly decorated with middle and late Byzantine marble spolia.
