Abstract

Antonio Palomino (1655-1726), a Spanish painter and art theorist, wrote a treatise entitled El museo pitorico y escala optica, first published in Madrid in two volumes (1715-1724). In the third part of the work among the Livesof 226 artists, that of Domenikos Theotokopoulos (El Greco) is included. The article investigates the reasons why Palomino enhances El Greco as a hero of Spanish painting, to whom ‘all the masters of this art owe eternal gratitude’.
