Abstract

On the island of Kythera and to the west of the village Aroniadika there is a ridge called Sklere; there a settlement was discovered by the Australian Archaeological Survey consisting, the medieval church of Saint Demetrios apart, of a precinct wall and buildings of unknown use and purpose. Those remnants should be considered as evidence of a temporary refuge constructed by the inhabitants in the case of a possible raid. Obviously, this was an attempt of the population of the north part of Kythera to defend themselves after the sack of the town of Ayios Demetrios (nowadays Paliochora) in 1537 by the Ottomans.
