Abstract

The Early Christian monuments on the island of Symi in the Dodecanese are located at five coastal sites. There are two basilicas at Nimboreio; from the first, part of the mosaic pavement and sculptures incorporated in later buildings (column capitals, mullions, fragments of closure slabs) survive, and from the second, on the site of the church of St Irene, survive part of the central apse and the south aisle, as well as architectural members. Two more sites are at Pedi and a fifth is identified with the monastery of the Archangel Michael Panormitis, in the katholikon of which inscribed marble columns have been used.
