The typology of Rhodian churches during the Hospitaller period (1309-1522)

Abstract
The churches built on the island of Rhodes during the two centuries of the Hospitaller rule are characterized by certain types and morphological features. These can be exemplified by paradigms met in the church architecture of the medieval town of Rhodes. More specifically, at least, five types can be discerned, while the morphological features employed showcase the basic decorative vocabulary in use. Finally, the existence in Rhodes of churches with Gothic architectural principles should be acknowledged as an expression of the penetration of the Western architectural tradition within the island.
