Abstract

Iconographical analysis of the slab with the gorgoneion in the Byzantine and Christian Museum of Athens (BXM 317) shows that its decoration belongs to the polemic against demonic idols. Through the association of its iconography with the martyrdom of St. Leonides, the fountain structure in Lechaion, where the slab was found, should be identified with the hagiasma of Leonides and his co-martyrs.
