Abstract

The paper examines the despotic Cretan icons on the iconostasis of the katholikon of the Sintza monastery near Leonidio, Kynouria. The icons, dated to 1642 and 1645 and executed by a Cretan atelier, rely on Cretan iconographic models of the 17th century, following in terms of style the contemporary conservative tendency of the Cretan School of painting. Their donors originated from Monemvasia, as did the donors of the majority of the despotic Cretan icons on the iconostasis in the katholikon of the Loukou monastery near Astros, Kynouria (1639, 1641). The relation of Monemvasians to the above-mentioned monasteries of Kynouria could be explained by their commercial and agricultural activities in this district.
