The quality of the sibling relationships and the adjustment of typically developing children and adolescents with a sibling with intellectual developmental disorder: A literature review
Abstract
The quality of sibling relationships undoubtedly contributes significantly to the adjustment of Typically Developing (TD) children/adolescents. However, the quality of the relationship between children/adolescents and their siblings with Intellectual Developmental Disorder (IDD) and its effect on their adjustment has not been thoroughly investigated. The present review aims to synthesize the existing literature, and to point out important issues for future research. The electronic search for published empirical research from 1980 onwards revealed 52 studies which are included in the present review. Research findings show that the sibling relationship can be characterized by warmth/closeness and at the same time by conflict and rivalry. The adjustment of TD children/adolescents may be positively or negatively affected or may be similar to that of TD children/adolescents without a sibling with IDD. The inconsistent research findings are examined in terms of methodological choices, such as the research instruments used, the number of participants, the use or not of a control group and the inclusion of both parents in the research. The methodological limitations of the reviewed studies are also discussed to further advance future research.
