Pedagogical practices in the curricula of the Greek kindergarten (1896-1989). A reading based on the sociological theory of B. Bernstein
Abstract
This study looks into the pedagogical practices in four nursery school curricula (1896-1989), through the lens of B. Bernstein’s theory on pedagogical codes and pedagogical discourse, focusing on the construction of valid knowledge, the methods of its reception, and the relationship between teacher and student(s). For the purposes of this study, a qualitative approach was adopted by deploying thematic data analysis. The findings of the research shed light on the gradual shift from visible pedagogical practices into invisible ones, and from the initial organization of valid knowledge with concrete boundaries into its gradual construction with less visible boundaries; the transition of a type of knowledge centred on the children’s everyday experience towards knowledge as the outcome of scientific practice; the modification of valid knowledge from being fragmentary into becoming holistic; the change of the rigid pace of knowledge transference and reception into a more casual one; and the gradual transition from the nursery school teacher’s tight control of communication and activities into interpersonal communication, although the asymmetry of the relationship between teacher and student(s) is maintained and concealed.
