Investigation of Teachers' Expectations of Professional Development on Innovative Teaching Methods
Abstract
Utilizing innovative teaching approaches, such as the cooperative and the project-based learning, can contribute to the development of students' critical thinking and creativity, something that constitutes a critical desideratum of modern educational systems worldwide. Appropriate professional development activities can prepare teachers adequately so that the application of these methods is more effective. Such programmes and activities can both equip teachers with a necessary background regarding the aforementioned methods and reverse any negative perceptions of them concerning innovative teaching approaches. This thorough preparation presupposes that teachers’ perceptions, needs and expectations are considered when designing relevant programmes. However, this is rarely the case, at least in the Greek context. For this reason, the present study, which is a small part of a wider research regarding teachers’ professional development, aimed at the investigation of teachers’ expectations about the contribution of professional development activities to the application of innovative teaching approaches in practice. Through this investigation it can be possible to highlight teachers’ perceptions regarding innovative approaches, the degree to which they possess the necessary knowledge to apply them, but also what they ultimately seek from the relevant training programmes. The present study can therefore, through all the above, highlight teachers’ specific training needs in this field of interest and thus provide clear directions to a more effective design of professional development programmes. Semi-structured interviews were conducted on a sample of 32 primary and secondary education teachers working in the regional unit of Achaia. The sample was selected through a combination of a stratified two stage cluster sampling and a critical case sampling. An interview protocol was used during the collection of the qualitative data. The interviews were completed in late 2018. The research demonstrated teachers’ strong need and desire for training in the field of innovative teaching methods, but also their doubts concerning those methods’ potential effectiveness in practice. Teachers’ high expectations from such an appropriate training were also underlined. Finally certain issues were recognized as major obstacles permitting the training programmes offered until today to succeed i.e. the absence of a collaborative culture between students but also between the teaching stuff as well, the deficiencies concerning schools’ infrastructure and most of all those programmes’ frequent inadequacy.
