Abstract

The present paper investigates ways of bridging non-scientific museum collections with scientific concepts, analyzing their exhibits’ educational values, and identifying explicit or implicit bridges between the exhibits and the scientific topics which correspond to the first grades of education. In this context, recent international research is presented as well as the results of previous research by the authors, both for the identification of bridges as well as their utilization in the design of science education programs for pre- and primary school students. More specifically, the case of the Archaeological Museum of Ioannina is described and the analysis of its exhibits as well as an example of a science education program implemented there. The bridges identified concern three of the four main topics of the science education curriculum in preschool education, living organisms, objects and materials, concepts, and phenomena from the natural world.
