The contribution of the Second Chance Schools to the symbolic capital of learners
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the expectations of the learners in Second Chance School (S.C.S), in regard to the stated objectives of this type of school and in relation to the socio-economic benefits during the economic crisis in Greece, after their degree. The paper uses the concepts of the field of institutionalized and symbolic capital from the theory of Pierre Bourdieu. The data were collected by using the technique of 14 semi-structured interviews and for their analysis it was applied a qualitative content analysis. Our research findings showed that the students consider the obtained school degree necessary but not sufficient to improve their economic and employment status. At the same time, they hope that its convertibility into symbolic capital, potentially, will bring them profits.
