Promoting diversity and multilingualism in kindergarten through language awakening activities
Abstract
In this article, is presented the implementation of a research and educational project of language awakening, in a kindergarten in the prefecture of Trikala. Specifically, the object of investigation is to what extent awakening to languages can bring preschool children into contact with multilingualism and diversity. The research is divided into the observation phase and then the educational intervention, where an attempt is made to highlight the importance of language awakening and the inclusion of multilingualism in the school classroom, through children’s contact with elements of six different languages, chosen according to the needs and their previous knowledge and experiences. The results of the research highlighted the benefits of the multilingual educational perspective on a cognitive and emotional level, while the educational intervention strengthened the children's contact with multilingualism and the recognition and understanding of cultural diversity inside and outside the classroom.
