Abstract

Developments in the global political economy over the last 10 years have called for a reinterpretation of the state’s economic role. Economic nationalism was the first notion that formulated systematic theoretical and analytical contributions regarding the roles that a state can play in assisting domestic industrialisation. These roles are about the domestic and international levels of state policies. This article analyses the main cases of countries that are considered to have developed a strong and export-oriented industrial base through the adoption of policies of economic nationalism. These include cases from both the past and the present.
