Information and Communication Technologies in Greece and their contribution to business innovation
Abstract
The basic characteristics and trends of the ICT sector in Greece and their role in the improvement of the innovation of Greek firms are examined in this paper. The main hypothesis underlying this paper is that although the growth of these sectors cannot be automatically translated in achievements in innovation output indicators, their growth and improvement of the products/services they offer in the national market can leverage resources, capabilities and knowledge in other sectors of the economy and facilitate innovative behaviour from all agents of the national innovation system. The fact is that ICTs are infrastructure technologies that affect horizontally the whole economy and across all sectors. Thus, even traditional sectors can benefit from the ICTs adoption and improve their innovative behavior, as the ICT use in an economy becomes equally important with ICTs production. In the paper we use data from an extensive field research in ten sectors of the Greek economy (800 firms), testing the effect of the ICT use on their innovative activity.
