Religion and dominant ideology in modern Greek society

Πολύκαρπος Καραμούζης
Abstract
The main focus of this article is about the relation between religion and the dominant political ideology. The presence of a Modern Greek State with the characteristic of centralization and on the other hand the need for the adoption of an official national ideology led to the transformation of religion into a factor supporting the dominant ideological theory. The establishment of the official Greek Church which was very close to the State led to the creation of a national-religious ideology. This fact transformed the public social area into homogenisation and conservatism. Consequently, the national identity with religious characteristics was the criterion for the legality of other ideologies which were different from the ‘official’ one.
