European reforms of university education and research

Christian de Montlibert
Abstract
The article refers to the announced reforms in university education and research, focusing on the case of France. The author defines the spirit of the reforms based on declarations both of the European Union and of organizations like OECD and the World Bank, and locates it within the general tendency of our times towards transforming education to a market controlled by the economy and its principles. He also underlines the negative consequences of such measures both for the staff of the universities and research institutes and for the universal dimension of knowledge they are supposed to provide. The author considers that only a mobilization of the interested parties and society in general could deter such a development.
