Higher education in Sweden

Πέτρος Γουγουλάκης
Abstract
This article outlines Sweden’s contemporary higher education from the perspective of the country’s political, societal and cultural development. Furthermore, a presentation is made of some characteristics of the Swedish tertiary educational system -the system of universities and university colleges- giving priority to the prevailing regime of governance and evaluation, the system of government study loans and the structure of the awarded degrees. Since the 1960s, the Swedish higher education institutes have undergone a process of transformation, shifting from institutions for the society’s elite to learning centres for the "many".
