The participation of Greek scholars in international scientific communities: (social science, law, philosophy)

Abstract
This paper reports some preliminary findings of an ongoing and broad citation study tracking the presence of Greek scholars in international scientific communities. We present our results concerning the collaboration of Greek scholars with 100 journals in the areas of Social Science (mainly Sociology), Law and Philosophy, published mainly by Springer and Blackwell, but also by Elsevier and Oxford University Press during the period 2000-2004. Although Greek scholars have a decent presence as authors (given the fact that Greek higher education is seriously underfunded), they did not manage to participate in the publication and management of these journals and reviews as editors or members of editorial boards. Also, their presence as referees is minimal. Another interesting observation was that only one third of the publications in law reviews are written by faculty members of the country’s three law schools (most of them are authored by scholars from other departments and graduate students).
