Cultural analysis in the post-modern condition: an approach based on the work of Braudel, Postman and Rifkin

Ιορδάνης Κ. Παπαδόπουλος
Abstract
The main purpose of this paper is, first, to examine the need and plausibility of providing a clear-cut definition of culture and civilization in the period of post- modernity. Secondly, having described the postmodern condition from a historical/genetic point of view, we show that what is at stake is the saturated self of the present-day individuals and the variety of consequences that we have to face due to the transition period to what could be called ‘technopoly’ and/or ‘cultural capitalism’. Finally, we look at the conditions upon which a moral approach and stance could be based at present. In this direction, we explore the notions of multiculturalism and autonomy.
