National center, diaspora and education

Μιχάλης Δαμανάκης
Abstract
In this article Hellenic diaspora in its double form -historic and migration diaspora- is discussed from the point of view of its relation to the so-called ‘national center’ -in our case, Greece. The author chooses language and language instruction as a topic on which he develops his argument concerning the process and the results of cultural continuity in diasporic settings, since language in most instances constitutes a clear case of cultural difference. The role of Greek language education in diaspora is discussed, whereas emphasis is placed both on the educational-pedagogic and the political-ideological dimension. In order to present the dynamics of the diaspora-national center interaction, the author draws on his deep and extensive experience as the coordinator of a longitudinal project aiming at the promotion and strengthening of Greek language teaching in European, Asian, African and transatlantic Greek diaspora communities. The central concept upon which the analysis is based is that of identity, especially ethno-cultural identity, as it is conceived by the diaspora Greeks and the institutions of the national center. The tensions between the actors of these definitions as well as suggestions for their solution are also discussed.
