Abstract

This study sets out to explore the Greek higher education teaching staff. The research was carried out mainly at Athens University Faculties in both humanities and sciences. For the collection and analysis of data, the ethno-biographical approach was employed and an attempt was made to highlight certain aspects of the identity formation and behavioural patterns of academics.
Greek university space was largely found to reflect prevalent traditional characteristics of Greek society, vis a vis social ascent, appropriation of income and occupational security. There was also manifested a degree of anomie, the origins of which must be traced in the problematic character of the legitimization of authority in society.
Academics were shown to fail to meet the favourable expectations and stereotypes of the general public, such as academic altruism, scientific and professional ethicalness and respect to the merits of the individuals, while a large number of them were prepared to take advantage of the former in order to attain social, political and and/or economic targets.
