The collapse of communism and T. Parsons

Νίκος Μουζέλης
Abstract
T. Parsons was one of the few social scientists who, already in the early sixties predicted, on the basis of a neo-evolutionist theory of change, the collapse of the Soviet Union. His theory argues that democracy is an evolutionary universal: after a certain level of diffren- tiation and complexity, the only way for a society to go on increasing its adaptive capacity is to ‘open up’ and institutionalize democratic - parliamentary forms of government. Societies, like the Soviet Union which fail to democratize will either break up or will increasingly occupy a peripheral position within the system of nation-states.
