Governance, trust and policy design: a comparative analysis

Michiel S. de Vries
Abstract
This article investigates the impact of public and private trust on the design of policy processes at the local level. In order to do this, it does not examine trust by people in general, but the levels of trust of those people central in the policy making process. It investigates to which degree both kinds of trust - public and private - are associated with views on the policymaking process, public participation and technocratic attitudes. By comparing the causal models around trust in people and trust in government, the author hopes to achieve a better insight in both phenomena. The article presents a concise theoretical discussion of both kinds of trust, the research data, comparative figures on both dimensions of trust and an explanatory analysis.
