Community crime prevention: rhetoric and implementation of the communitarian concept

Έφη Λαμπροπούλου
Abstract

The study examines some of the issues of community crime prevention politics as an application of communitarianism, which has been at the centre of interest during the last decade.
The first part refers to the factors that contributed to the promotion of community crime prevention in northern America and other developed countries, as well as in Europe, especially after the collapse of communist regimes. Next, it briefly places the course and function of communities in Greece into historical perspective.
This is followed by a description of community crime prevention models operating in Europe and North America during the last decade. Finally, the study attempts to identify the role of these models in contemporary society, to make an initial assessment of them and further to define their perspective. The question whether they constitute an expression of ‘new romantic’ or a form of ‘governance by distance’ remains open. For the time being, it seems that community prevention is rather orientated toward taking advantage of community powers at the lowest financial cost, than to strengthening social cohesion and community integration.
