Legitimacy as a basic sociological category in Max Weber’s work

Νικόλαος Τσίρος
Abstract
The present' study attempts to chart the Weberian meaning of legitimacy for the empirical validity and the stability of a social order. Initially, the motives that guarantee the legitimacy of an order are examined with special reference being made to the relationship between law and morality. Following this, the important aspects of legitimacy as a methodological tool for research and the possibility of enriching it with normative content are presented. The study concludes that the rationally orientated action in relation to absolute value (wertrationales Handeln), constitutes not only a factor underpinning a legal order but also an internal cause for the subjects to believe in that order.
