Electoral abstention in Greece: 2000-2009
Abstract
Electoral turnout percentages in Greece have consistently remained high during the first decades after the restoration of democracy. Yet, since the 2009 European election, turnout appears to be in decline. The aim of this paper is the investigation of electoral abstention in Greece. In this direction, we follow two distinct methodological approaches. In the first part we employ descriptive statistics to compare the socio-demographic and attitudinal background of respondents who chose not to cast a vote in the elections between 2000 and 2009. Our main question here concerns whether the recent decrease in turnout is driven by specific social groups. In the second part, we build a multivariate logit model in order to assess the impact of a series of theoretically stimulating factors on turnout in the 2009 parliamentary election, where voters' participation was significantly lower compared with previous elections.
