Representations of the private in the mass media

Ηλίας Αθανασιάδης
Abstract
The paper traces the changing balance and reconceptualization of the 'public/private' relationship in the light of the underlying socio-cultural, economic and technological transformations that permeate post-modernity. In this effort, our contextual framework is constituted by major mediated scandals concerning Greek public officials, celebrities and 'ordinary' people. Drawing thus on some of the most typical and diverse cases of media exposure of 'private' lives since 2000, we address the questions of how the ongoing debate over the right to privacy versus freedom of expression is being resolved in Greece and why the media are preoccupied with displaying 'private lives' in an age of growing mediated visibility.
