Aspects pf civil society in Greece: The example of environmental and antiracist NGOs

Αλέξανδρος Αφουξενίδης
Abstract
This article focuses on particular aspects of the relatively new and emerging ‘third sector’ in Greece, namely the organization and functioning of environmental and antiracist NGOs. More specifically, it discusses the similarities and distinctions between these two types of organized civil society with respect to nature of organization, relationships with the wider public and relationships with local authorities and the government. The main bulk of the qualitative evidence presented is from a fieldwork study which was carried out during 2003-2005, consisting of seventy-five in-depth interviews with NGO activists and members. The evidence portrays a dynamic but fragmented and compartmentalized sector which occupies an ambiguous position between the dominant political party system and society at large. This is clearly illustrated by some of the findings which point to difficulties in acquiring funding and resources coupled by weak institutional ties with the various levels of government.
