Unpublished Testimony
Abstract
The testimony of Agathi Notidou refers to the 1940-1953 period. She lived in Athens and during the wartime resistance, she became a cadre of the National Solidarity. In the post-war period, she was exiled to Chios and Trikeri, convicted to a death sentence and was released in 1953. Her testimony was written in 1958 and rewritten in 1977, but it was never published. In this essay, the effort to identify the causes of no publication reveals the importance of the political conjecture in writing/editing testimonies, in defining their content and finally in the construction of memory. It also indicates the reasons why the testimonies of exiled women were written and published earlier than those of political prisoners. Moreover, it is unusual to find published testimonies of people who have signed a repentance declaration, and Agathi Notidou came very close to signing one.
