Abstract
An important archaeological site was revealed recently at Ekklesies, Voutiani, in Laconia, N-NW of Sparta. In the late 5th-early 6th century belong a settlement and a Christian funerary cult place, which is a unique example in Laconia to date. All the finds attest to the presence of a small Christian community in the immediate vicinity of Sparta. The settlement developed in the middle of the 6th c. New buildings were erected while the existing ones underwent change of use; In the late 6th c. the site was destroyed by fire and was abandoned, most probably as a consequence of the upheavals caused by the Slavic invasions in the Peloponnese.
