An unknown italo-cretan icon of the Virgin Galaktotrophousa in the Zoodochos Pigi monastery in Patmos
Abstract
At the monastery of Zoodochos Pege of Patmos a plethora of portable icons has been treasured from several donations made by the devotees who used to bequeath their icons to it. Among these bequests belongs the portable icon of the Virgin Galaktotrophousa discussed in the present article. The work according to its iconographic and stylistic observations can be attributed to a Cretan workshop active in the late 15th century and it can be presumed that it was a work meant for private devotional purposes.
