A Deesis icon from Kythera in the Byzantine and Christian Museum, Athens
Abstract
Presented is an icon with representation of the Deesis, dedicated by the Kytherian priest Nikolaos Charamountanis and his family. The work comes from the monastery of St John ‘sto Gremo’ in Kythera, which was founded in 1592 by a group of Kytherians, among them a hieromonk of the same name as the priest. The iconography and style of the icon are examined, and an attempt is made to link it with artistic and social circles of the period, with particular emphasis on local history.
