Christ Pantocrator. A comnenian icon in the monastery of St Catherine, Sinai
Abstract
At the monastery of Sinai an icon of Christ Pantokrator of relatively large dimensions is a unique work of art. The iconographic and stylistic analysis of it showcases the last quarter of the 12th century as the period of its creation. However, the technical traits of the icon, notwithstanding its sophisticated art, lead to the assertion that the icon can be attributed to a Sinaitic workshop, details that can be observed in regards to the technique to the epistylion of Saint Eustace as well. Finally, the icon could have been a despotic one destined for the chapel of the Holy Five of Armenia which is within the precinct of the monastery.
