Abstract

This article reexamines the two mosaic inscriptions of the church of Saint Demetrius in Thessaloniki. Their text is being thoroughly assessed both in terms of form and of historical background in order to make their meaning more lucid and to highlight to the various phases of the city of Thessaloniki or the building activity of the church itself. Especially the second inscription is being interpreted anew reconsidering the name of the certain Leo mentioned in it, who could either be the Pope Leo the Great (440-461), or the emperor Leo I (457-474) thus designating the foundation of the church at the middle of the 5th century.
