Christ ἐν ἑτέρᾳ μορφῇ
Abstract
This study discusses the appearance and development of the iconographic subject of Christ ‘in other form’ in the Palaiologan period, and specifically in a group of monuments dating between 1295 and 1320. The depiction of Christ and the placement of the scene in the church are interpreted in accordance with the symbolic substrata of the subject in the ecclesiastical literature. Finally, an attempt is made to link the subject of Christ ‘in other form’ with the spiritual environment facilitated by the opposition between the Arsenites and the official Church.
