Christ carrying the cross. A Rhodian icon of the eclectic trend
Abstract
The Bishopric of Rhodes has in its collection a portable icon of an unknown provenance depicting Christ carrying the Cross. The icon which draws its iconographic inspiration from Western prototypes can be placed around 1500, while another icon from the church of the Virgin of the Castle in Leros shows a similar concept in its design, rendering and style with the Rhodian icon and may too be dated before 1522. Those two works of art of the eclectic style which have probably been produced in Rhodian workshops showcase in the most meaningful way both the trends and the taste in demand during the Hospitaller period.
