Abstract

The church of Saint John the Theologian at Zarko near Trikala is the katholikon of a monastery that once belonged to the bishopric of Gardiki. The katholikon belongs typologically to the Athonite triconch in terms of ground plan and to the composite cross-in-square variation in terms of vaulting. Its western cross arm is fairly elongated and at its end it has a narthex annexed to it. The typological characteristics and the few morphological features that can be distinguished, date the katholikon around 1700.
