Abstract

In this article are discussed the written and artistic sources pertinent to the three most popular military saints of the Byzantine world, the saints Theodore, George and Demetrius. The research of their vitae, narrations or miracle accounts offers a great deal of information. The exploit of the latter delineates interesting aspects and insights into the social and devotional history of Byzantium. Hence, the information that has surfaced pertains to the development of the saints’ cult, the integration of their cult into the broader historical and social sphere of each period, and outlines the iconographic development of their most venerated depictions.
