Abstract

The inscribed epitaphios of «Metropolitan Isidoros» (1415-1423) from the Athonite monastery of Agios Pavlos is included among the characteristic examples of the liturgical type. It successfully combines liturgical elements with figures of the Virgin and of St John that are as of that time still secondary and perhaps comprises one of the earliest stages in the transition from the liturgical type to the establishment of the historical character of the epitaphios as a vestment. It holds a special place in the historical development of this liturgical cover since it is grouped among the earliest examples of epitaphioi with the representation of the figures of the Epitaphios Threnos (Lamentation).
