New subjects depicted in Asia Minor icons. The case of the sacrament of Holy Confession
Abstract
This article presents three icons in the Byzantine Museum with the representation of Holy Confession, which date to the 19th century. An attempt is made to understand why this subject appeared and spread during the last centuries of the Ottoman period. It is associated with the dissemination of Exomologetaria, which also comprise the iconographical source for the representation.
