The 6th grade students' representations regarding the cell concept
Abstract
This study investigates the students' representations of 6th grade about the cell concept. Specifically, the research question examine whether students perceive the cell as a structural unit of all organisms, after teaching of τhe corresponding module. The survey was conducted in April 2017 in two primary schools in Rhodes. The sample consisted of 90 students (40 boys and 50 girls) who had been taught the corresponding module 4 months ago. As research tool, a questionnaire was used which consists of closed and open questions. Data analysis has revealed that most students don’t perceive the cell as a structural unit of all organisms. They, also, have difficulty in realizing that a cell can exist independently as a unicellular organism. The findings of this study are compared with similar findings from other relevant studies.
