Disinformation matters. The media-experts perspective on fake news, trust in media and counter strategies
Abstract
Disinformation is an issue of growing concern, especially with the digitalisation of the media environment and the ease of access to such sources as well as the multiplication of false news. This paper explores the main aspects of disinformation based on interviews conducted with experts that have been engaged in the creation of credible news and/or the fight against fake news during the pandemic. Based on a data-driven approach, we introduce conceptual distinctions referred to the phenomenon of disinformation and discuss factors and actors related to the spread of the above-mentioned phenomena in the era of the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating the impact of disinformation to the augmenting distrust towards the media and counter strategies for the combating of disinformation.
