Abstract
The local elections of November 7th and 14th, 2010 were the first elections held after Greece's accession to the support mechanism of the IMF and the EU as a consequence of the economic crisis. One of the most salient issues highlighted in these elections was low turnout rate. In our analysis we examine the level of turnout at both the aggregate and individual levels. At the aggregate level we present turnout rates in national, European and local elections from 1981 to 2010 in order to examine the variation of turnout across time, different types of elections and finally among urban and rural regions. Moving to the individual level, we focus our analysis on examining the socio-demographic characteristics and qualitative differences such as ideological self-placement and interest in politics as predictors of abstention. With the use of Multiple Correspondence Analysis, we build a profile of those who abstain from the 2010 elections distinguishing them from those who abstain for political and personal reasons.
