Language, literacy and power
Abstract
Donaldo Macedo and Paulo Freire discuss the relationship between culture and education by analyzing the role of critical literacy for the understanding of language as an element of class. They examine the issue of basic education, marginalized culture and dominant ideology. The two discussants also touch upon the importance that the perception of self through language has for marginalized or culturally disadvantaged groups, and the liberating aspect that language use can assume for them.
